Overview

The goal of the Opportunity Grant is to help low–income adults reach the educational tipping point in high wage, high demand careers. Eligible students pursing an approved program may receive funds to cover tuition and mandatory fees up to 45 credits and up to $1,000 for books per academic year.

Eligibility Guidelines

  • Enrolled in an approved program:
    • Computer Support Technician
    • Medical Administrative Assistant
    • Medical Assistant
    • Pre-Apprentice Construction Training (PACT)
    • Phlebotomy
  • No previous degree/certificate beyond high school diploma or GED (must have LESS than 45 college credit hours)
  • Washington State resident for the past 12 months
  • Receiving food assistance OR family income within 200 percent of poverty level (proof required)
  • Must be in good academic standing with a cumulative 2.0 GPA or higher

Opportunity Grant provides:

  • Funding for tuition and fees up to 45 credit hours
  • Funding for required books up to $1000
  • Funding for quarterly ORCA cards (if available)
  • Educational planning and advising
  • Employment services such as resume assistance, job search, and connecting to employers
  • Referrals to on-campus and off–campus resources

Opportunity Grant Application procedure

  1. Apply for Financial Aid.
  2. Attend a Start Next Quarter workshop at SVO. Sign up at startnextquarter.org.
  3. Stop by Room 109 to see Darcie Callahan, the BFET/Opportunity Grant Advisor.
